The sun has officially peaked out from behind the clouds and the weather is starting to get hot, which means one thing for contractors –new building construction!  After three years of construction, the area’s newest development, Assembly Row in Somerville kicked off its first phase of openings this past month and J.M. Electrical is very excited to contribute to this development.  This stage of the project features 300,000 square feet of retail outlets and restaurants, 100,000 square feet of office space, and 450 residential units.  When completed, Assembly Row will feature an AMC Movie Theater and LEGOLand’s Discovery Center, along with over 2,000 residences, almost 2 million square feet of office space, and many more places to shop and dine.

As with most of the recent development in the Boston area, a commitment to energy efficiency is one of the main focuses.   According to the United States Department of Energy, commercial buildings lead the industrial and transportation sectors in energy consumption.  As experts, we were eager to help install building control and energy management systems throughout the project and transform the Assembly Row site from a former Ford Motor plant into a 22-acre mixed-use development along the Mystic River.  Notably, J.M. Electrical installed a control system for the AMC Movie Theater, which will be essential when operating the facility without disruptions.  These enhancements help to lower utility bills, reduce building and infrastructure maintenance, and ultimately increase the property value and marketability of the facility.

In addition to providing these industrial buildings with advanced control systems, we were eager to be a part of a project that will help revive a formerly neglected area of Somerville.  The addition of 32+ retailers, restaurants, and office buildings is sure to boost the job market for the city while also bringing foot traffic and tourism to an area just outside the state’s capital.  The space is very accessible, and only three stops away from Downtown Boston on the MBTA Orange Line.  The convenient access to public transit and open highways will hopefully bring additional patrons to the development.  In addition, Assembly Row is riverfront accessible with a beautiful pet-friendly 6-acre park along the Mystic River.  These open spaces will help improve the quality of life for residents and visitors.

And this is just the first phase! Overtime, Assembly Row will make up over 2 million square feet of office space and retail shops, and provide countless jobs to residents in the area.  The development is much anticipated, and the Commonwealth is eagerly awaiting the opening of the many new businesses sure to boost the region’s economy.  Because of this, J.M. Electrical Company is proud to collaborate with other contractors to develop a new hot spot for Somerville, MA.  Below is a map of the development:
