The world’s largest travel site TripAdvisor has just announced the acquisition of Where I’ve Been LLC. Based in Chicago, Where I’ve Been is a social platform with an interactive map that lets users share where they’ve been, lived, and want to go. The entire Where I’ve Been product team will join TripAdvisor. Terms of the deal were not disclosed and it is unclear whether the product team is set to move to Newton.

TripAdvisor is clearly putting a large focus on social travel as they continue to scale as an independent company. Where I’ve Been’s Facebook application has allowed over 10 million people to create color coded travel maps with over a half a billion places.

TripAdvisor was recently spun out of Expepdia as its own independent company. The company was founded in February 2000 by Stephen Kaufer (current CEO), Langley Steinert, Thomas Palka and Nick Shanny. They raised their first $4M in 2000, signed Expedia.com as a client for their ad targeting technology in 2002, and sold to online property conglomerate IAC (which owned Expedia) just four years later for over $200 million. A year later TripAdvisor was included in the 2005 spin-out of Expedia, and today the company employs over 500 people and enjoys 36 million monthly visits across a portfolio of travel brands.

Where I’ve Been has raised a total of $1.75 million and was founded by Michael Dalesandro and Craig Ulliott.
