DC Inno Approved: Tech Events to Know About This Week



Here's what we've found for the best startup and tech networking events in the D.C. area to check out this week. Keep an eye out for the highlighted events, which are a sure bet for a great time.

Monday, October 19

Event: CaBi Hack Night IV hosted by DC Transportation Techies

Come out Monday night for a vibrant discussion about how new technology projects can improve the state of local mass transportation. Ryan Sears, the co-founder and CEO at SurveySnap, will lead a discussion about how to grow your startup from an early stage, while staying lean, into a profitable business. Event: DC Tech Meetup - Mobile Edition

The DC tech community’s flagship monthly event arrives this Tuesday once again. Held at the MLK library in Chinatown, a short walk from the metro, DC Tech Meetup typically attracts nearly 500 attendees every event from various industries and businesses. If you’ve never been, this is a necessary event to get involved with if you want to know more about the local tech scene and the innovation that is occurring here in the District. Check it out. This month’s event will focus on presentations from startups active in the mobile software development space.

Wednesday, October 21

Event: DC TechBreakfast @ the DC Economic Partnership

Grab a bagel, cup of coffee and start your day off right by getting to know some local startups that are making waves. TechBreakfast D.C. is back with some new presentations, founders and companies, to give you an early morning update on what’s going on in DC Tech. This week we have MDLegalApps, Cam-Built, Speak Agent and Spotluck, pitching the audience on their products and business plans. After the pitch portion, there will be an open Q&A for guests.

Event: Startup Grind w/ AOL CTO William Pence

Location: Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, 1200 Seventeenth Street, Washington, D.C. Date/Time: Wednesday, October 21, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Event type: seminar, 1-on-1 interview, fireside chat, casual networking, info-session Price: $20

In a fireside chat with AOL executive William Pence, you’ll learn about the journey behind AOL and what it has taken to build out a major internet/media brand in the 21st century. Pence leads all aspects of AOL’s global technology strategy, platform development and external partnerships. Brian Park, Startup Grind regional director, will conduct the interview, which will conclude with an open Q&A from the crowd.

Event: Kickstarting Your Business from Scratch hosted by Startup Central

You’ve likely heard or read something about lean startup practices, but Startup Central now wants you to come ready with all the questions you’ve been harboring for this informational Q&A-centric event. A panel of presenters/speakers will be available in a casual and open event to help answer questions based on their own personal experience building successful businesses. “This is a golden opportunity to get the individual attention you need, and a game plan on what to do next,” the event organizer writes.

Weekend, October 24-25

Event: DDL Data Brunch and Project Pitchfest 2

Location: GWU Elliott School of International Affairs, Room 113 1957 E Street NW, Washington, D.C. Date/Time: Saturday, October 24, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Event type: brunch, casual networking, hackathon-style, pitch contest Price: Free

The departments of labor and commerce in addition to the U. S. Geological Survey are partnering to host this data science event. Seven teams of D.C.-based data scientists have come together for a three month incubator and are now ready to present their findings, which work to improve projects spanning health, economics the environment. Enjoy a free brunch and get involved by helping the judges vote on a winner. Boom.
