The blogosphere has a new member: incumbent Mayor Tom Menino.

According to an AP report, Menino launched NextBoston on Saturday, counting down his final 100 days in office. The purpose of the blog is to “smooth the transition for the successor and the city.”

His 20-year term officially comes to an end Jan 6.; NextBoston is intended to ensure the city operates business-as-usual while the city welcomes either John Connolly or Marty Walsh to office.

The general election to is Nov. 5.

Starting on Sept. 24, NextBoston launched a series of countdown posts — one per day — that simply displayed pictures of days ticking down —  105, 104, 103, 102, 101 — in white, surrounded by a blue background. On Sept 28. Menino and his team released a video (top) detailing the expectation of Boston’s mayor.

In the course of 1,460 days in office, or one term, Boston’s next mayor will examine the budget, plow the roads, prepare for natural disasters, help put the city on a world stage, hug a kid in a duck costume, break ground on housing and business developments, and hold up to three press conferences in a single day, according to the video.

The video is rather light-hearted, but also seems to serves as a polite nudge to people who question the actual responsibilities of the job. Menino gives a personal sign-off at the end, assuring that he and his administration will always have the city’s and the next mayor’s back.

The most recent post, released Sept. 29, announced that in July 2014, the “Waste Reduction Division of the City’s Public Works Department will enter new five-year contracts with residential trash and recycling contractors.”

Good to know. We promise it gets more exciting than that.
