At around 4:30am PT this morning, two Los Angeles Police Department detectives were ambushed from behind just outside of the Wilshire Division station in the Mid-City area. The two officers were injured but were rushed to the hospital and duly treated. A manhunt is currently underway for the shooter–or shooters–though multiple people have since been detained.

According to the LA Times,  “Multiple individuals  have been detained in a dragnet stretching from San Vicente to Washington boulevards and Rimpau to Redondo boulevards.” The perimeter set up by authorities is thought to span approximately 25 city blocks while those who live inside are being asked to remain in their homes. Emergency personnel will be available within the zone for those who require it.

Cmdr. Andrew Smith said in a statement of the matter that the detectives “were undercover officers working the burglary task force here out of the Wilshire station. They pulled up to the front of the gate and as they were opening the gate, from directly behind them, somebody for some reason opened fire on their car, striking it many times.”

The gunman was described as a black man between 30 and 35 years old, wearing all-black clothing and a hat or cap. Detectives were able to return fire though the suspect fled on foot in what local station KTLA describes as “a southwesterly direction.”

Neither of the officers has been identified but Smith did mention that one was a 20-year vet while the other had 11-years under his belt. Roughly 200 LAPD officers as well as four k-9 unites have been dispatched to the scene and will comb the aforementioned perimeter, going door-to-door if necessary to track down the alleged gunman.

A motive for the shooting is as equally unknown as the suspect, though it isn’t farfetched to assume it has something to do with the officers’ undercover gigs.
