Just yesterday, leaked photos of the alleged low-cost iPhone and its plastic casing hit the web yesterday causing a stir and some raising some curiosity. Apple has yet to confirm (or deny) the rumors and images, though the surge of leaked specs and pics as of late add just enough assurance to the speculations to believe that Apple will be rolling out with something more affordable. Now, independent parties and websites are rolling up all of the gossip and creating their own concept mock ups of what the low-cost iPhone will possibly look like.

The new concepts take into account the rear plastic shell’s variety of bright, neon colors but also rounded rear microphone hole and rounded rear edges, aspects that are consistent with previous details of the supposed low-cost handset’s appearance.

The renderings also show a slightly thicker device than the iPhone 5, measuring at 8.5 mm thick compared to 7.6 mm for the iPhone 5. The lower-cost iPhone is also slightly taller and wider than the iPhone 5 to account for the thicker plastic shell, according to Mac Rumors.

Other than those details, not much else is known about the low-cost iPhone and what will be running under the hood. The mock ups do show, however, what appears to be Apple’s next generation mobile operating system, iOS 7 which it debuted at WWDC back in June. The UI is flat–an aspect touted and damned by both proponents and naysayers–with bright, basic color schemes that are matched to the app or icon it represents.

As mentioned before, Apple has yet to confirm the production of the low-cost iPhone despite all of the photo leaks. Further, the lack of confirmation leaves the actual release date just as uncorroborated. Lucky for us tech junkies, the execs at Apple are creatures of habit which means that if they’re planning on launching the low-cost handset, it will likely be around the same time they’ve launched all of their smartphones in the past. The consensus is the next-gen iPhone 5S will launch in September which would peg the low-cost version for around the same time. But stay tuned, as more leaked information is sure to come.

What do you think about a low-cost iPhone? Will Apple be sacrificing more than just an aluminum case to open up its more affordable smartphone to a larger market?
