A big Wimbledon victory yesterday by Marion Bartoli in the women’s singles sets the stage for today’s men’s singles championship between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. The prestigious grass-court tennis tournament has culminated in this number 1 vs. number 2 matchup as will surely not disappoint as both contestants have faced elimination and have fought hard to keep from going home.

Both players will be riding waves of momentum into today’s match but on paper the favorite has to be Novak Djokovic. The 26-year old from Serbia boasts an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world ranking of number 1 for a reason. Wimbledon is shaping up to be a rematch of this year’s Australian Open between the same two players, though Djokovic took that one home as well for his third consecutive and fourth overall.

Murray, of course, was on the other end of each of Djokovic’s consecutive Australian Open wins so he’ll be playing with a vengeance. He’ll also be looking to take home his first Wimbledon Championship, having made it to the finals last year only to be beaten Roger Federer, one of the biggest name superstars to be ousted from the tournament in the early stages.

When prompted by Sports Illustrated how he feels mentally compared to last year, the 26-year old from Scotland noted “I think I’ll be probably in a better place mentally. I would hope I would be a little bit calmer going into Sunday. But you don’t know. You don’t decide that. I might wake up Sunday and be unbelievably nervous, more nervous that I ever have been before. But I wouldn’t expect to be.”

This year’s Wimbledon finals is shaping up to be one for the ages, with plenty of upsets, underdogs, coming to an end with two of the greatest tennis players of all time.
