If it ‘aint broke, don’t fix it. It seems as though this was EA Sports’s mantra when cooking up new features for the latest installment of its popular hockey video game franchise, NHL 14. Now, with the game’s Anniversary Mode, users can access what ESPN rated as the second greatest sports video game of all time, NHL ’94. Pre-order for NHL 14 is launching today and will be consumer available on September 10.

Check out the trailer for NHL ’94 in Anniversary Mode of NHL 14:

Initially released on Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo, NHL ’94 revolutionized gaming for hockey fans as it introduced one-timers, cutting-edge graphics (for that time period, anyway), post-goal celebrations, glass-shattering slap shots, and arguably the most engaging aspect of all, the ability to play 2 v 2.

“All built within the NHL 14 game engine, NHL ’94 Anniversary Mode showcases its hockey video gaming roots through a retro presentation including blue ice, classic star-shaped player indicators, 16-bit arena powerbars, no adboards, and throwback organ music. Relive the glory days of NHL ‘94 withNHL ’94 Anniversary Mode in NHL 14,” according to EA Sports.

NHL 14 will be a formidable game in its own right, boasting the most realistic fighting between players this side of the TD Garden thanks to the new Enforcer Engine. Also updated will be one-touch dekes, improved collision physics, and independent limb movement and intelligence for goalies.

For those pre-ordering NHL 14 today or waiting to buy it on September 10, what are you looking forward to most in the latest installment of the popular franchise? Will NHL ’94 be the games’ biggest draw? Are you still teeming with angst after the Bruins heartbreaking loss to the Chicago Blackhawks?
