Bad news for those anticipating the fall release of the iPad mini. It was reported today from Chinese publication Economic Daily News via Apple Insider that the second-generation iPad mini may not be released until Q1 2014. Expected to be outfitted with Apple’s signature Retina display, it may be more difficult to incorporate in the iPad mini’s display than initially thought.

The current iPad runs 9.7-inches, nearly two inches larger than the current 7.9-inch iPad mini. The difference in size poses an issue in terms of pixels and aspect ratio. Should Apple make an attempt at an iPad mini with Retina display, the Cupertino electronics conglomerate would need to figure away to pack 3.1 million pixels into the smaller display.

Apple has been mulling over the pros and cons of an iPad mini with Retina display for some time now, though now it’s apparent as to the reason why. Just earlier this week South Korean tech publication DigiTimes posted a similar report, the language of which made it seem as though Apple is capable of an iPad mini with Retina display, just unsure.

KGI Securities anaylst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is pretty much always right when it comes to predicting Apple release dates and specs, forecasted back in April that Apple could hit a number of production snags in attempting a Retina display for the mini tablet but did offer up what he thinks could be a viable solution, “a more affordable iPad mini in the interim to help boost sales and fend off low-priced tablet competitors. He sees a low-cost iPad mini being priced between $199 and $249.” The current iPad mini goes for $349 for 16GB of data.
