Samuel LeClair, a 62 year-old man from Malden, was arrested on Tuesday on charges of stealing a 68-foot ferry boat from the Boston Harbor on Christmas Day. Specifically, LeClair was charged of larceny over $250 and breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony, according to Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office.

LeClair was arraigned at Boston Municipal Court and almost held on $1,500 bail. But Judge Thomas C. Horgan wanted him evaluated by a clinician before deciding on bond. After the evaluation, he was deemed competent and his arraignment continued on Thursday. Eventually, LeClair was released on personal recognizance but is no longer allowed to go near the waterfront or board any boat. He has to remain land-locked at least until September 18th, when he is due back in court.

According to Boston.com, just before noon on December 25th, several marine units responded to a call that a boat was loose on the harbor. They found LeClair on a passenger ferry (Fort Independence) tied to the docks near the federal courthouse. He told officers that he had untied the ferry at Long Wharf (a short distance from the courthouse) and made his way over to the docks he was found at. LeClair also told police that his girlfriend, Stevie Nicks, was on board. However, police officers found him alone. He was taken ashore and then brought to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was evaluated and ultimately released.

No damage has come from this incident, the ferry boat is fine; the only loss is of LeClair’s water-roaming privileges.
