Almost two weeks since Sunni Muslim militants broke some 500 people out of Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq — including senior members of the infamous terrorist organization al Qaeda –the United States has issued a global travel alert after receiving information that a terrorist attack may occur in the Middle East, North Africa, and areas close in proximity. The U.S. will also be closing foreign embassies in the region as a precaution on Sunday.

CNN is currently reporting that “The steps showed heightened concerns about what U.S. officials said was intelligence in recent days that indicated a potential attack in Yemen.” Yemen is a country located in the southern region of the Arabian peninsula bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east.

Supposedly, CNN has sources that claim the group responsible for the 9/11 attacks on New York City’s World Trade Center in 2001 indicated that potential attack in Yemen is likely.

The State Department travel alert said, “Current information suggests that al Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August.”

United States embassies in the countries of Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Yemen and 11 others, as well as consulates in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will be closing on Sunday.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to BostInno for more information as we’ll be sure to keep you updated as more details become publicly available.
