Overnight five people were injured in a head-on collision that took place on Bourne, MA’s Sagamore bridge. Police say that a vehicle veered into opposing lane and oncoming traffic for reasons unbeknownst to them and struck another SUV head on. Five people were reported hurt and none dead, though the extent of those injuries are still undisclosed.

WCVB notes that Route 3 southbound was shut down for several hours while police investigated.

This is the second crash on the Sagamore Bridge this summer, the first coming on the fourth of July where a hit-and-run left two people dead and at least five more injured. Police were unable to locate the dark colors pickup truck that was responsible for the crash, which occurred mere feet from last night’s scene.

According to the Bourne Courier, four of those hurt went to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. One was taken to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. Alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the accident.

The Sagamore bridge, which spans the Cape Cod canal and connects the popular Massachusetts tourist spot to the rest of the Commonwealth, is notoriously narrow and strikingly lacks a median or divider separating the two. A simple jerk of the steering wheel can send a vehicle reeling into the next lane with dire consequences.
