Today Sony sent out invitations for what’s likely a Sony ‘Honami’ release date event on September 4, just one day prior to the kick off of IFA in Berlin, Germany. Samsung has already dispatched invites for its own press event where it’s likely to debut the Galaxy Note 3 phablet, and now it appears that Sony is following suit with its upcoming Sony Xperia i1 codenamed Honami.

IFA in Germany’s capital city is an annual technology convention made popular, at least most recently, for being the forum of choice for many contemporary electronics makers to debut their respective devices as evidenced by both Samsung and Sony expressing interest.

As for the specs, here’s what’s going around the world wide web as of now. Specs are scare but the device is rumored to boast a 5-inch 1080p display, a 20-megapixel rear-facing camera capable of 4K video recording, a Snapdragon 800 processor, a 3000mAh battery, and 2GB of RAM.

The camera is likely where the Xperia i1 Honami will make its bones as the high-end smartphone market is absolutely sodden with lucrative specs and posh features. Photo imaging technology is the avenue of choice for smartphone manufactures looking to drive their own handset ahead of the pack as of late and Sony is no exception. As if its own shooter isn’t enough, though, Sony looks to be gearing up to release Carl Zeiss SC-QX10 and DSC-QX100 lenses of which both expected to include built-in sensors, a Bionz processor, Wi-Fi/NFC connection, and an SD card slot.

The Honami will face some stiff competition in the Galaxy Note 3 as users will be keeping an eye out for either an Exynos 5 Octa or Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, a 13MP camera, 32GB of internal storage with the likelihood of MicroSD support, and probably some kind of external upgrade with the bezel or shell.

How does the Sony Honami sound to you? Will it be able to viably compete in a smartphone market dominated by Samsung and Apple? Do Sony phones have the wherewithal to break away from the handset pack? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
