Just as Sony announced its press conference plans for the same date, Samsung will be releasing its Galaxy Gear smart watch alongside its drool-worthy Galaxy Note 3 smartphone on September 4 just before IFA. Though some tech pundits may think Samsung’s new handset announcement prior and so close in proximity to Apple’s iPhone 5S release is a blatant attempt to steal the 5S’s thunder, really they should be keeping a keen eye on the Galaxy Gear.

Supposedly, the Samsung fan site and SamMobile has received confirmation “that Samsung will indeed unveil the Galaxy Gear smartwatch on the same day it takes the wraps off its third-generation Note” though nowhere do they specify how they came about said confirmation. They do note in the same article, though, that correctly predicted the Galaxy note 3’s specifications.

Though the Galaxy Gear’s specs are still undisclosed, SamMobile continues “The Galaxy Gear (SM-V700) will act as a companion accessory for Samsung’s Galaxy phones…it might possibly have a flexibly display.” Take a look at one of the patent filing pics above and you might get a good idea of how it’ll look.

The Galaxy Gear sounds strikingly similar to none other than Sony’s SmartWatch 2 which affords users the ability to handle calls by simple touching their wrists, take photos remotely, control presentations remotely using Presentation Pal, track workout routes and routines through Runtastic and Mapping, and connect to their respective devices. Having NFC certainly adds to the SmartWatch 2’s allure, as does access to messages, emails, notifications, and social media networks while reading previously received notifications when not connected to a smartphone or the internet.

Apple has also been rumored to have a smart watch in the works, unofficially dubbed the iWatch, though tests back in May, claims by analysts, and personnel changes are a far cry from those over at Cupertino making a formal announcement. Still, like Samsung, Apple is stocked with a number of smart watch patent filings in its own respective arsenal, though the electronics maker has a notorious reputation as being a patent troll.

Stay tuned for more information regarding the release of both the Galaxy Gear and Galaxy Note 3 as more leaked photos, specs, and features are sure to emerge ahead of their release.
