UPDATE: The Boston Globe reports that six firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries after battling the five-alarm South Boston Fire. The specific cause remains unknown. Reports indicate that the church will be a “total loss.”

Firefighters are currently battling a fierce fire in South Boston at the corner of Athens and F Street, a blaze which has recently been upgraded from four- to five-alarm status.

The building on fire is believed to be the Albanian Orthodox church at 410 Broadway, according to reports by Fox 25. It is unclear if anyone is in the building. No injuries have been reported.

Fox 25 is reporting that firefighters have been ordered out of the building, a command thought to be the result of the increasing severity of the fire and the possibility of the roof collapsing.

Fire Department spokesmen Steve MacDonald told the Boston Globe that the fire was first reported at 9:13 a.m.

The Boston Fire Department has posted several pictures of the blaze on its Twitter account, including the one above.

This is a developing story; details will be added as they become known.
