Apple’s iCloud is offline to millions this morning as part of the service is unreachable to a small percentage of users. CNET reported that at 4am PT (7am ET) Apple’s Status Page revealed “issues with iMessage, Photo Stream, Documents in the Cloud, Backup and Restore, and iPhoto Journals.” At the time of this article all of those facets of iCloud are still down.

Apple doesn’t necessarily report the reasoning behind iCloud’s malfunctions, posting “Users may be unable to use iCloud Documents, Photo Stream, iPhoto Journals, or Backup & Restore. Users may also be unable to send or download attachments in iMessage” as an attempt to hold users over.

It does, however, make mention that only 1% of users are affected. But keep in mind, as CNET aptly points out, that iCloud users are upwards of 300 million meaning some 3 million people are unable to access the service.

What’s causing the outage remains to be disclosed by those over in Cupertino but it’s worth mentioning that back in July Apple experienced a developers center outage due to a breach in security involving unknown hackers which kept the site down for weeks on end, something very uncharacteristic from the electronics manufacturer which prides itself on being on the cutting edge of technology, security included.

Fan site Apple Insider notes that while inconvenient to those directly affected, it could be worse as iTunes lovers felt the wrath of a service outage that hindered Apple’s music library to some 20% of users.
