New iPads are going to be released today!

UPDATE: The new iPad release date is today, October 22nd. The iPad event start time is 1pm ET or 10am PT.

With the iPad 5 release date and price still stuck in ambiguity, recent iPad 4 discounts point to the next-gen Apple tablet’s release being imminent. New promotions from Best Buy and Apple’s online store are offering users as much as $50 off the current-gen version of the iPad, suggesting that perhaps those over in Cupertino are preparing to stock retail shelves with something new.

More specifically, the promotions are geared towards open-box items and refurbished devices though it’s still a steal for those looking to purchase an iPad. According to IBT, “The company assured that open box devices has no damage and all accessories come with the device.” You can see for yourself right here and here.

While the discounts do suggest a next-gen iPad release isn’t too far off the horizon, the actual date, specs, and price remain up in the air. Most are pegging Apple to host a September 10 press event where the Cupertino-based electronics conglomerate is to debut its iPhone 5S, low-cost iPhone 5C, and iOs 7 mobile operating system. There, the iPad and iPad mini could also be unveiled to the public, but keep in mind Apple has yet to comment on any of the above.

As many are circling September 10 on their calendars, some are looking further towards October for the iPads to be consumer available.

The September date is being considered mostly because Apple has traditionally launched its iPhones while Autumn is in full swing and rarely deviates from the norm. The iPad is more difficult to lock down because past versions have been launched in the Spring while the fourth-generation version hit the retail shelves some eight months after the third-generation.

When it comes to specs, Apple has been equally tight-lipped. The bare bones are thought to include Apple’s upcoming A7 processor, support for 4G/LTE connection, internal storage worth up to 128GB, and 5MP rear camera. The 9.7-inch display on Apple’s flagship tablet will look to be duplicated in the 7.9-inch iPad mini, meaning Apple has reportedly been testing Retina display technology in the smaller variant.
