The New England Patriots have officially cut quarterback Tim Tebow this morning after failing to capitalize on preseason opportunities to make the three-time Superbowl winning team. The former Heisman Trophy winner and University of Florida standout raised eyebrows in New England when Bill Belichick opted to sign him to  a two-year contract with the Patriots in June including no guarantees, but now Pats fans can rest a little easier.

As noted by USA Today, “The Patriots have carried only two quarterbacks in recent years” and already they employ the use of all-time great gunslinger Tom Brady and backup Ryan Mallet.

Tebow racked up unimpressive preseason stats totaling 11-of-30 passing worth 145 yards with two touchdowns to go along with two interceptions.

It’s a long fall from grace for this year’s Forbes most influential athlete, once briefly thought to add another dimension to the Patriots fast-paced offense for his ability to run between the tackles, make defenders miss, and push the pile.  Since leaving Urban Meyers’s Gators though, his passing ability has been heavily scrutinized and for good reason when you take a look at the above stat line.

Interestingly, though, Tebow showed flashes of what earned him college football’s most coveted accolade, and as a sophomore to boot, while chalking up a handful of late season and post-season victories in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons for a Denver Broncos team that took a chance on him in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft.

Tim Tebow’s future in the NFL is all but certain but one thing is: It won’t be in Foxboro. Still, there are likely to be a few suitors interested in Tebow’s unrefined athletic ability and penchant for pulling W’s out of his helmet. Whoever considers taking a chance on the openly and audibly devout Christian remains to be seen.

Still, I doubt we’ve seen the last of Tebow if only for a short while.
