Few movies ever end up being as funny as they appear in the trailer, and while it’s still early to tell with the new trailer for Neighbors starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Dave Franco, and Rose Byrne, the comedy due to hit theaters in May 2014 looks raucous to say the least. A contemporary spin on the frat-tastic comedy genre that dominated the early 2000s (I’m looking at you, Old School), Neighbors is helmed by a proven director, sports a hilarious cast, and is accompanied by a sense of the ridiculous.

The synopsis, according to movie aggregator site IMDB, is “A couple with a newborn baby face unexpected difficulties after they are forced to live next to a fraternity house.” Sounds like a new take on a tired plot. That is, until we realize the couple is Seth Rogen (Knocked Up, Pineapple Express) and Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, Get Him to the Greek) and the fraternity house is full of adolescent bros consisting of Zac Efron (HighS School Musicals) and Dave Franco (21 Jump Street, James Frano’s brother).

The trailer admittedly details just as much of the flick as the trailer does, though what we know of its making could bode better than initially expected. Efron and Franco star as two fraternity brothers hellbent on partying like me circa 2008 and making Rogen and Byrne’s characters lives miserable. And while it sounds predictable enough, Efron and Frano appear plenty at ease in their roles, surely poking fun at their own broish personas.

Nicholas Stoller is directing and after laughing all the way through Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, I have the utmost faith that Stoller will have me on the ground laughing in suite.

Perhaps most interesting of the movie are the screenwriters Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien. Both are relatively new to taking up the pen but each has been around gut-busting comedies enough to write one of their own with Cohen having served on the set of Anchorman and O’Brien that of The 40 Year Old Virgin.

The film is due out on May 9, 2014 but stay tuned to BostInno for the latest trailers and clips. In the meantime, take a look at the trailer above and let us know your initial reactions.
