Announced yesterday at a pre-IFA press event, Sony unveiled its Xperia Z1 “Honami” the release date of which has been ambiguously designated for later this month. The Xperia Z1, tentatively labeled Honami leading up the the event, may have had some of its spotlight stolen by Samsung and its own announcement of the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear but Sony’s Xperia Z1 could be a dark-horse contender as one of the better high-end devices to hit the market in the not so distant future.

While Samsung may have opted to up the specs of its Note III, Sony is making moves in imaging technology hoping to take a share of the burgeoning smartphone photography market bolstered by the likes of Nokia’s line of sensors ripe with megapixels. Here’s what you can expect from the Xperia Z1 prior to its vague launch at a price unknown to hopeful users thus far.

The 20.7-MP camera comes with 3X lossless zoom, G lens, and BIONZ tech while becoming the first handset to shoot video in Ultra HD. InfoEye identifies and recognizes what the user plans on taking a snapshot of, Timeshift burst can snap up to 61 images in just two seconds, and PlayMemories is Sony’s photo cloud storage option of choice. And for even better photographs, the QX10 and QX100 are seamlessly compatible with the device.

The screen is a 5-inch “Triluminous” Full HD 1980 x 1080p display, the entire smartphone will run on a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, and will operate using Android’s software.

The battery is a solid 2000mAh, the device boats 2GB of RAM, and there is 16GB of internal storage with the option for more via MicroSD connectivity. Interestingly, the entire smartphone is waterproof.

There’s been no specific date or price mentioned for the Xperia Z1 but during Sony’s keynote it was dropped that the device will be launching by the end of the month.
