Just a month ago, we shared the news that everyone’s favorite sports bar, Tavern in the Square (your neighborhood “TITS,” no comment) will be opening a new location in Boston’s South Station. But now, the Boston Business Journal reports that Tavern in the Square is “working” to open four additional locations. Which means that by the end of 2014, there is a very good possibility that you will be able to get your TITS buffalo wings and sports viewing fix not only at South Station, but also near North Station at “the new Victor apartment building across Causeway Street,” on Main Street in Northborough, and possibly at The Point, “a new shopping center under construction in Littleton.”

But since most of us associate the bar with our own neighborhoods (i.e. mine in Allston conjures up fishbowl drinks and sugar hangovers, etc.), will this expansion kill that neighborhood feel? Is “TITS” becoming generic?

With this future growth spurt, Tavern in the Square is about “to become one of the fastest growing restaurant groups in Greater Boston.” Which means the bar runs the risk (in my opinion) of becoming just another chain, similar to Buffalo Wild Wings or Chili’s Grill and Bar, whose rapid expansions have now reached international proportions. Is TITS destined to be just another sports bar chain?

The owners don’t think so. Tavern in the Square’s co-owner, Stephen DeSousa, told the Boston Business Journal that he’s “determined to maintain the company’s locally oriented approach, even as it expands significantly.” He claims that “each location has a slightly different feel,” localizing and maintaining a unique selling proposition that Tavern in the Square offers each neighborhood. He also points out that TITS is not “corporate-owned” claiming to be “just a group of three guys.”

But while I love cheap buffalo wings and a sports bar atmosphere as much as the next person, I also love feeling different. And that I, as an individual, made a unique decision to eat and drink in a place exclusively located in my neighborhood. But maybe that’s just me. My local neighborhood sports bar, Coolidge Corner Clubhouse, isn’t as large as Tavern in the Square and their menu may not be as cheap, but at least I know there’s only one. I can assume that I’ll see my neighbors, my roommates and even the same bartender on a weekly basis—it’s a local gathering place that everyone in the Coolidge Corner community feels they are a part of. A place where you can share ideas, “boo” over a bad football play and talk about the latest fall beer on draft together in your neighborhood.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not hating on TITS’ expansion. I just personally prefer that local, neighborhood, good ole “Cheers” bar feel. I can’t help it.

So what do you think? Do you prefer your local watering hole or a popular sports bar chain like Tavern in the Square?
