The winning Powerball numbers from last night’s $400 million jackpot were printed on a single ticket for a sole winner from South Carolina who has yet to step forward and claim their debt-defying prize. With the numbers 7, 10, 22, 32, 35 and Powerball 19 have made the unidentified person the nation’s newest millionaire. The chances of hitting all five digits were one in 175 million.

Those are the same odds, by the way, of getting struck by lightning 258 times or incurring the wrath of 60 different tornados.

The Powerball yesterday proved to be one of the largest in the game’s history, fifth all time, and could’ve easily surpassed the record of $590.5 million won by an elderly woman in Florida earlier this year had nobody hit last night. The Chicago Tribune notes that back in August, “Ticket holders in New Jersey and Minnesota shared a $448 million jackpot.”

43 states currently participate in the lotto game, the last being California which joined in April of this year, as well as Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The rules for playing Powerball are simple. $2 buys you a ticket with the choice of five numbers (1 through 59) and a single Powerball number (1 through 35). In order to win the jackpot, the gamer must match each number plus the Powerball number for, says the Powerball website, “either an annuitized prize paid out over 29 years (30 payments) or a lump sum payment.”

For those who spent a few extra, lingering dollars on tickets, there’s still hope for next time. And in that respect, I’m still curious as to what all of you would do if you were instantly rewarded with a cool $400 million.  Personally I’d pay off my mountain of student loans, buy myself a reliable car, and go on a well-deserved exotic vacation for an extended period of time. Boring perhaps, but everyone has different tastes and necessities.
