And hello to the new restaurant, Tamper. Tufts students will be missing their neighborhood go-to burrito-chain on Boston Ave., reports the Tufts Dailywhich according to the news site, the founder and CEO of Boloco John Pepper “decided to close… due to difficulties in branding the restaurant as unique from its local competitors.” Local competitors being the popular Anna’s Taqueria and Chipotle (always a crowd fave).

But despite Boloco’s lack of customers, many nearby students are expressing “disappointment at the news of the chain’s departure from Medford” — which perhaps means another problem that Boloco faced was attracting customers other than students.

Maybe it’s the chain’s delicious smoothies, shakes and chips, but I too crave Boloco on a daily basis – and therefore, sympathize with the neighborhood. Luckily, the Boston Ave. Boloco will be replaced by breakfast. Well, a breakfast restaurant anyway. Tamper, “the new restaurant and coffee shop operated by Boloco co-founders… will be open in early September.”

And, instead of more burritos for the neighborhood, the business will be serving “classic breakfast and lunch options with a specialty in coffee.” Because that’s just what Boston needs…another coffee shop.

Boloco CEO, Pepper, “intends to continue the chain’s relationship with Tufts in some capacity,” stating that “there are other Boston locations that Tufts students can patronize…we are obviously feeling sort of empty about leaving this location. We never want to close a restaurant, but this is what we have to do.”

Hopefully, the opening of Tamper will avoid putting too much of a damper on the closing of Boloco. And it will be interesting to see how well the new restaurant does in comparison to Boloco – as restaurants in the area “face the challenge of bringing in both students and the surrounding community.”
