It wouldn’t be fall in New England without a trip to the apple orchard. A sunny but crisp afternoon spent climbing trees and reaching for that perfect fruit (because we know the best apples are found at the top) is a quintessential autumn activity. Whether or not you even like apples is beside the point—just getting out there and soaking up the season in all its glory is the point. That, and cider donuts.

Of course, knowing that there are plenty of like-minded Bostonians out there, it’s best to keep your options open with many delicious destinations in mind in order to have the hassle-free experience you dream about—alongside that wooly scarf, boots and in-hand pumpkin coffee—when apple picking. (Not the iPhone 5S type of apple picking, of course: you’ll have to wait in line to get one of those.)

We’ve gathered a list of 25 pick-your-own apple orchards in and around Boston. Some are a decent drive away, but if you’re willing to dedicate a day to getting away from the crowds and your hands on the most apples, it’s likely worth it.

In addition to a variety of apples, many farms also offer raspberry picking (which are also in season), pumpkins, hayrides, corn mazes, petting zoos, fresh squeezed cider—and did I mention cider donuts? Shop around and find out which orchard suits your needs best, and plan a trip. There are many apple dishes out there just dying to be made.
