Half of Amtrak’s Acela trains will resume trips between Boston and New York today, according to a company statement released yesterday.

Last Thursday, a power shortage cancelled Acela services between Boston and New York while causing massive transportation delays in the New York Metro area.

The Boston Globe reports that five trains will run back and forth between Boston and New York; ten trains typically operate between the two cities. The first NYC-bound Acela left Boston at 6:05 a.m this morning, and the last such train will leave at 4:15 p.m this afternoon. The first Acela heading to Boston from New York departed at 6:20 a.m., and the last will leave at 7 p.m.

The Acela cancellations forced riders to use Northeast Regional Amtrak services, which have been operating slower than normal; Several regional service Amtrak trains — operating on diesel — have have been forced to stop for extended periods of time in order to change engines, causing numerous delays since the Acela services were shut down.

As a Northeast Regional Amtrak passenger this weekend, I can tell you that train 166, which was scheduled to get in at 1 a.m. this morning, pulled into South Station just after 2:30 a.m. On Friday, Amtrak train 179 left South Station on time at 6:45 p.m., but stalled around near Bridgeport for an engine change, delaying the trip about 45 minutes.

Amtrak is expected to make further announcements regarding tomorrow’s services, the Globe reports.

Travelers who chose not to use the regional Amtrak services following the Acela cancellations, will be refunded their money.
