Perhaps Samsung is tired of people slinging not-so-nice names like “copy cat” and “wannabe” its way. Over the weekend the South Korea electronics giant posted a list of gold phones it’s manufactured dating back to 2004, an attempt, no doubt, to show that Apple, now the most valuable brand in the world, may be the one to have arrived late to the flashy handset game.

The post came over the weekend on Samsung’s blog after it came to light that Samsung actually released a gold smartphone ahead of Apple’s latest iPhone 5S, though it’s only been made available in the United Arab Emirates, the reason as to why the news has only reached domestic shores as of late. Samsung also recently pledged to create its own 64-bit processing chip (ŕ la Apple’s A7) as well as design a metallic backplate (ŕ la all iPhones not ending in 5C).

Though the post by Samsung was essentially all photographs, a few bits of text allude to the company’s frustration with Apple’s championing of the flashy new color, urging users to “check out some of the phones we’ve released in gold in the past (just off the top of my head).”

Though Samsung may have beaten Apple to the punch as far as a gold cellphone is concerned, you’ll notice that Samsung’s lineup is of the mid-to-low-end variety. Nobody can argue that Apple’s gold iPhone 5S is the first fully-functional smartphone to don the gilded color.
