The winner of the MBTA’s map re-design competition has been announced. Last April, MBTA officials announced the  “New Perspectives” T Map Challenge, open to public to the public. Submissions to oust the old map were evaluated by riders before one was selected as the winner.

There were 17,045 votes cast on the top six designs chosen by a panel of experts, before Russian interactive and graphic designer, Mikheil Kvrivishvili, had his design — “Map 1”– selected as the winner. Submissions were received between April 9 and May 14. The new Orient Heights Blue Line Station and Assembly Square Orange Line Station will be the first to display the map when they open in 2014. Redesigned maps will replace existing maps at stations once necessary.

Kvrivishvili’s design displays all Green Line stops and Silver Line stops at downtown stations. Officials said the new map is more organized; featuring bus, ferry, commuter rail and Amtrak routes. Transfer Stations have been highlighted and subway to commuter rail/bus stations have also been featured. The Kvrivishvili design received 6,837 votes. The map is subject to change with new stations planned for the Green Line Extension project. “As we continue to grow and improve our system, the new map will be a great symbol of the changes and updates we’re working on as a whole,” MBTA GM Beverly Scott said.
