Yes, printed pants have been on everyone’s radar for a while now. But full-on multicolor florals and geometric patterns? Let’s just say they aren’t for everyone. Luckily, we have a subtler alternative to propose. So whether you like your prints loud or quiet, you can get in on the action.

Multicolor: When someone says “printed pants,” something like this multicolored version is most likely what you visualize. Whether floral, plaid, striped, polka dotted, ikat, camo, or any other of a bajillion possibilities, these pants are easier to style than it may seem. Stick with a solid top in black or white (this is almost always your safest bet). Mix it up with chambray. Or play with color by wearing a top in a complementary hue – this is especially fun if your pants are black and white.

Tone-on-Tone: This more under-the-radar version of the printed pant has the pattern sewn, embroidered, or stamped on in the same color – this is your office-friendly option. Wear the same hue throughout (a fall 2013 trend) or pair the pants with a complementary solid. The subtlety of the print also allows for easy mixing. Once you treat your base like a solid, almost anything goes.

Our theyskens’ theory Boutique opens Tuesday, October 8, at 11AM ET.
