If I say the words “hospital food,” I’m pretty sure your thoughts go straight to the gutter. Because let’s face it, the last time you had hospital food it probably tasted like plastic. But at the Massachusetts Health Council’s 2013 Awards Gala event this week, that won’t be the case.

And if you enjoy watching Top Chefs battle it out on TV, then this event will be no less entertaining. A twist on the popular Bravo show, the Massachusetts Health Council will be featuring a “Best of the Best” Hospital Chefs Competition.

That’s right, according to a release “10 hospital chefs representing Boston-area hospitals will prepare appetizers and tapas under a set of strict nutritional guidelines” with the purpose of promoting healthy eating.

The 10 executive chefs from the healthcare and hospital industry along with their teams will include: Atria Senior Living, Beverly Hospital, Boston Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Healthcare Services Group, Lowell General Hospital, Southcoast Health Systems (St. Luke’s Hospital and Charlton Memorial Hospital) and South Shore Hospital.

A celebrity panel of judges, including former New England Patriot Jarvis Green, will determine the winner. WCVB-TV’s Pam Cross will be the emcee and Boston-based celebrity chef Michael Schlow of Top Chef Masters will be designing the gala dinner menu.

Celebrity chef Schlow stated that “now, more than ever, it’s important to educate people on the benefits of healthy eating, organic products, and non-GMO foods. It’s an honor to support the Massachusetts Health Council and their mission to promote healthy eating habits among the people of Massachusetts.”

The event will be held at the Renaissance Waterfront Hotel and will honor prominent health care leaders in Boston and the best workplace wellness program. Susan Servais, executive director of the Massachusetts Health Council, summed it up by stating in a release that “by honoring awardees and highlighting the exceptional skills of those hospital and health care industry chefs, we hope to recognize champions while promoting that healthy eating can be fun and delicious.”
