Multiple outlets report that the Green Line’s Washington St. T stop, on the B Line branch, along Commonwealth Avenue was shut down and multiple nearby apartment buildings were evacuated after a gas line was ruptured by construction crews.

Boston.com reports that a backhoe hit a gas line, four inches thick, at 1867 Commonwealth Avenue around 12:30 p.m. The incident reportedly occurred when an operator was trying to remove a tree stump, a Boston Fire Department spokesman told the Boston Globe.

Gas was still leaking when National Grid arrived at 1:30 p.m, the spokesman said, and the Washington St. stop remained closed.

As a precaution, nearby apartment buildings were evacuated while responders waited for National Grid to repair the leak. MBTA shuttle buses were sent to the Washington St. stop to transport passengers, an MBTA spokeswoman told the Globe.

Fox Boston reports that the outbound side of Commonwealth Avenue was closed from Chiswick Road to Chestnut Hill Ave. The MBTA’s B Line branch was experiencing some delays.

No injuries were reported, according to the Fire Department spokesman.
