Twitter. Is. On. Fire.

The talk? The first Boston mayoral debate, of course.

Alright, point taken. The Red Sox took precedent tonight for a lot of folks. Completely understandable. However, there was a debate taking place between mayoral candidates John Connolly and Marty Walsh that aired at 7 p.m. on WBZ.

Before you get a snapshot of what the Twittersphere was saying about the debate, take the following into consideration:

There were about 300 #BosMayor tweets the from the start of the debate until 7:46 p.m. — the exact time Koji Uehara threw his last pitch to clinch a 1-0 Sox victory. The debate would conclude 11 minutes later at 7:57 p.m. In those eleven minutes, 154 tweets with the #BosMayor filtered in.

So, during the first 46 minutes, about 6.5 #BosMayor tweets came in per minute. From the close of the Sox game until the end of the debate, the rate of #BosMayor tweets was 14 per minute. That’s better than a two-to-one ratio.

If you thought tonight’s debate was a bit of a snooze-fest, remember that the Sox, strangely enough, may have had an impact on the first of four debates, at least in terms of public interest.

Peter Kadzis posed the following question earlier: “How risky are the candidates going to be with an audience that hasn’t been maximized?”

The answer: not very.
