It’s been almost a year since Hurricane Sandy mercilessly ravaged the entire Eastern seaboard. Wreaking havoc from Maine to Florida, even across the Appalachians, the infamous superstorm became the second costliest disaster of its kind since 1900 — when not counted for inflation. In hopes of being better prepared for a similar circumstance, the Environmental League of Massachusetts has begun running an ad calling on Marty Walsh and John Connolly to pledge a comprehensive safety plan.

The one-two-punch campaign comes in the form of a YouTube video uploaded just yesterday as well as a petition asking both Boston mayoral candidates a simple question in the spirit of preparedness: What is your plan?

The video is of the hypothetical variety, a forewarning of sorts, of what could happen to the streets of Boston should a Sandy-type disturbance not detour around The Hub next time and hit it directly the way it did New York City or the Jersey Shore. Aptly entitled “Bolyston River,” the clip depicts the point of view presumably of an average Bostonian having been swept up by the torrential flooding of said storm and surged down Boylston Street.

Then, in bold typeface, “Will our next mayor be prepared?”

Interestingly enough, environmental agendas have been strikingly absent in the mayoral campaign thus far with both Walsh and Connolly focusing heavily on education reform, job creation, neighborhood development, and diversifying departments and cabinets.

It’ll be interesting to see if either hopeful responds to the call for action. Both are progressive candidates with Boston’s best intentions at heart, so stay tuned for the latest regarding environmental safety strategies directly from the campaign trail.
