Lately, it seems like we are in the midst of a baby name popularity contest. Everywhere you look from the Today Show to the Huffington Post, the “most popular” baby names of 2013 are truly the talk of the town. Nameberry, a baby naming website, recently revealed the Most Popular Girls’, Boys’ And Unisex Baby Names of 2013. The most popular girl name was Imogen while the most popular boy name was Rowan.

And according to the Today Show, it seems that even celebrities are getting into the action. With the rising popularity of celeb baby names like “Knox, Louis and Sasha,” it looks as though we’ll be seeing these names start to sprout up throughout the country.

These celeb names along with Nameberry’s most popular list may be hot now, but what about in 1960? To get an even better idea of baby name trends throughout the decades, check out this “wondrous GIF,” which shows the most popular baby girl name in each state over the course of several decades.

According to The Atlantic, the GIF baby name map was built by “Deadspin’s Reuben Fischer-Baum using data from the Social Security Administration.” The map allows you to clearly see the most popular girl name for each year with a limited color palette.

As you can see from the GIF, and as Fischer-Baum explained in Jezebel, the “baby naming generally follows a consistent cycle: A name springs up in some region of the U.S. … and then sweeps the country, and falls out of favor.” It is clearly a baby naming cycle, one which continues today. According to the map, the most popular baby girl name from last year was Sophia.
