Do you realize that this is the last weekend before Halloween? I know — it snuck up on me too. But let’s face — while there’s always the typical Salem getaway option before Halloween, chances of it being completely jam-packed this weekend run ridiculously high. In fact, you may find yourself fighting in line, just to have your palm read. Thankfully, there are other weekend getaway options to celebrate the spooktacular holiday in New England.

One such last minute alternative (if you’re a brave soul) is to pack your car and head to Newport, RI for a full days worth of ghost hunting at Fort Adams. Yes, that’s right — just like the Sci Fi show, you can now be a real life ghost hunter for the weekend. Surrounded by paranormal activity inside of the historic Fort Adams’ “Fortress of Nightmares”, you’ll come face to face with some terrifying encounters. Trust me, it’s freaky and (if you’re brave) this weekend could potentially end up being the best, most horrifying Halloween ever. Here’s how to plan this weekend’s Halloween getaway in Newport.

Stay Here:

Forty 1 North Marina Resort

As soon as you walk into the harbor hotel, you will be simply astounded by the spectacular views of Newport Harbor. The huge windows, cool color palettes and sunshine illuminated rooms offer an extremely comfortable and relaxing stay by the sea. All guest rooms and suites come with numerous customizable amenities such as gas fireplaces, wet bars and iPads. Just take a look inside if you don’t believe me.

Go Here:

Fort Adams’ “Fortress of Nightmares”

Fort Adams, 90 Fort Adams Drive, Newport, RI

Trust me, I’m pretty sure this “Fortress of Nightmares” will be twice as terrifying as any Salem haunted house you’re considering this Halloween. Fort Adams is a creepy fortress filled with “twilight inhabitants” and honestly looks like your nightmare come to life. Inside Fort Adams, you can participate in “FEAR,” a haunted attraction inside the fortress where you can explore the dark underground Tunnels of Terror. This haunting attraction runs nightly from 6pm to 10pm. Visitors can also participate in the “Fortress Ghost Hunts,” starting at 10:30p.m.

The Fortress website evens cautions to the public: “Not recommended for children under 12 – There are no refunds for any reason. If you want to leave because you are too scared, then we’ve done our job.” Ouch.

If this disclosure at the bottom of their website isn’t enough to convince you that this place is downright terrifying, I don’t know what will. Buy your tickets here before they sell out.

Eat and Drink Here:

Brick Alley Pub

140 Thames St., Newport, RI

After a terrifying haunt and ghost hunt at the Fortress of Nightmares, there’s a good chance you’ll be left starving. After all, spending hours inside of a totally freaky fortress is enough to make anyone forget a meal or two. Once you leave, head to Brick Alley Pub for delicious comfort food, hamburgers and sandwiches.
