Boston UberX drivers are planning to strike Wednesday afternoon in protest to recent fare cuts.

[UPDATE 5.p.m.] So far, no strike appears to be taking place. We’ve reached out an Uber Boston contact, and will update the article as we hear back.

Scott Kirsner tweeted earlier today:

Uber’s Nairi Hourdajian, a company public policy and communications director based in San Francisco, told BostInno over email that the UberX price cut has actually “significantly increased demand,” for the company’s service. In doing so, the cut has increased driver earnings, according to Hourdajian.

“Drivers are grossing more earnings per-hour after the price cut than they were before, with driver earnings up 22 percent per-hour,” Hourdajian said. “Earnings per driver hour have never been higher on UberX than they are now, following the cut.”

UberX announced the Boston fare reduction on October 15 in a blog post, offering costs “30 percent cheaper than a taxi.” The post was written by Annika Heinle, a community manager at Uber Technologies.

UberX rate breakdown:

  • Base fare- $2.50
  • Speeds below 11 mph- $0.40 per minute
  • Speeds above 11 mph- $2.05 per mile
City of Boston Taxi Rates
  • Base fare- $2.60
  • Every additional 1/7 mile- $0.40
  • Idling/waiting time- $28 per-hour

Earlier this month, UberX announced that fares were temporarily being cut by 30 percent or more in Los Angeles and San Diego, with hopes of increasing its ridership.

UberX was launched in Boston in early 2013 as the company’s low-cost option, originally  offering costs about 40 percent less than UberBLACK cars, with a base of $5. Currently, however, base fare for the service is $2.50 while UberBLACK has a base fare of $7.

“Drivers are understandably worried [about the cuts],” Hourdajian said. “We are working on making sure that they are aware of the data now that we have seen it play out over the last few days.”

BostInno asked to speak with an UberX driver but has not been put in contact.

On October 22, Uber published a post on their Boston blog promoting free UberX and UberBLACK rides up to $20 for all riders.
