Not all figures are created equal, so it’s silly to expect that all women can fit easily into formfitting blazers and dainty blouses. For those of us with broader shoulders or bigger arms, finding these items can be a battle not worth fighting. Taking into consideration a few tips, however, makes for a much easier time. (Trust us.)

Go wide. The standard slim, tailored sleeve can feel constricting on larger upper arms. For some extra comfort (without sacrificing fashion), try a blouse or jacket with a dolman or kimono sleeve. These sleeves are wider, so your arms have more wiggle room – and crossing them won’t make your back seams feel like they’re doomed to burst.

Choose stretch. There’s no harm in a little spandex. Try for a blazer with up to 5% in its fabric content. You’ll be able to move around with ease and still get that essential structured look.

Size up and tailor down. If you have your eye set on a piece that just won’t fit your frame, go for the next size up. Some tops and most well-made jackets can be tailored down to fit your figure. Otherwise, a loose-fitting blouse can be tucked into a fitted skirt or worn beneath a decorative vest without looking overly slouchy.
