Move over Pumpkin Spice, there’s a new coffee flavor in town. And it comes in the form of your favorite cupcake batter: Red Velvet. Yes, today Dunkin’ Donuts officially debuted their much anticipated Red Velvet Latte. After seeing BuzzFeed’s recent guessing game over what the latte could possibly look like, I decided to wade the line this morning for a sip of Dunkin’ Donuts latest coffee creation.

For those who live a sheltered sugar life, the MA-based coffee chain also provides a highly popular Red Velvet Drizzle Donut — an annual hit among DD fans. So it makes perfect sense that the chain would wish to extend their Red Velvet product offerings to coffee drinks in order to differentiate themselves from Starbucks’ myriad of Holiday offerings.

So what is my verdict on this seasonal drink? For starters, unlike the picture above, I did not detect any fake red food coloring on the latte (which is probably a good thing). However, this may have just been an oversight from the DD staff. Regardless, I was relieved. Also, immediately after I opened the lid, the Red Velvet aroma was smelled by everyone sitting within five feet of my desk. Sorry, guys. Here’s a picture of the “Red Velvet” coffee drink below…

As for the Red Velvet Latte taste, there really isn’t much to say other than it tastes very sweet. If you normally put two or three (hell, maybe even four?) packets of sweetener in your latte, then this is the drink for you. All it is is a sweetened-up latte with a cute holiday name attached to it. Kitschy for sure, but I can’t say that I detected much of a Red Velvet flavor.

Dunkin’ Donuts executive chef Stan Frankenthaler told The Daily Meal, “we’re incredibly excited to be rolling out an item that translates bakery concepts into a beverage.” The Red Velvet Latte is debuting among Dunkin’ Donuts’ other seasonal drinks. One other new addition to the coffee chain’s drink menu is the Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate… yum yum.

The Red Velvet donut which inspired the latte is a big seller during the holidays. According to The Daily Meal, it will also be “joining seasonal coffees including peppermint mocha and white chocolate” as well as other flavored hot chocolates.

I recommend only drinking the Red Velvet Latte if you’re in the mood for something sweet. As for me, I’ll stick to the Starbucks’ Gingerbread Latte for now.
