Where I grew up in the south, we celebrated holidays and special occasions (heck, even non-special occasions) with only one acceptable dessert: pie (never to be mistaken for cake). Whether you’re kneading a homemade crust or slicing freshly picked apples, this sweet dessert requires thought and care. And now this holiday season, you can show just how much you care with your purchase of a pie from Community Servings.

The free home-delivered meals and nutrition program for the critically ill in Massachusetts is hosting the fundraiser, Pie in the Sky. Here’s how it works: Boston’s best restaurants, bakeries, caterers and hotels bake and donate pies, which in turn are sold to Boston residents (i.e. you). Or Bostonians can choose to be “pie sellers” that help with selling the pies directly to family, friends and colleagues.

These delicious Thanksgiving pies all costs a measly $25 — well worth a spot at your Thanksgiving dinner table. And the best part is that your 25 dollars goes directly toward providing a week’s worth of home-delivered meals to a Community Servings’ critically ill client.

In my humble pie opinion, this fundraiser is clearly a win-win situation for all involved. You can never go wrong with more pie and the delicious baked good always makes for a great holiday present to others. Not to mention, the $25 goes towards a good cause.

The pie types include an apple, pumpkin, pecan, an “Anniversary” themed pie, a no sugar-added apple option and finally, (my personal favorite) a sweet potato pie. How can you say no to that?

The Pie in the Sky event offers plenty of different ways to help out. Not only can you purchase a pie for yourself and/or help sell pies, you can also give pies as a gift to others, donate a pie in someone’s honor, volunteer at a Pie in the Sky event and (if you’re a professional) even bake the pies yourself.

But whether you’re a pro in the kitchen or not, Pie in the Sky’s ready-made option means there will be no shortage of pie in your Turkey Day future.
