Boston is known as a city with deep Irish roots and a strong affiliation with its culture and nothing exemplifies this more than the fact that it elected another mayor of Irish descent. Mayor-elect Marty Walsh is so popular in Éire that in the subsequent days of his victory over City Councilor John Connolly, the state Representative and former labor leader has made the front page of newspapers in Galway, and others in the district of Connemara.

Twitter user @LarryPDonnelly was the first to dispatch the image over Twitter showing just how prominent Boston and Ireland ties truly are.

Donnelly’s photos are from the front page of the print version of the Galway Advertiser and the Connacht Tribune, which also boasted these ads on its homepage online

The Galway Independent also has a shout-out to Walsh on its homepage, amplified by a photo of Walsh alongside President Barack Obama.

With hopes of being received as the more relatable candidate, perpetually noting where his parents came from became a staple of Walsh’s mayoral campaign. Walsh is the son of working-class immigrants, both of whom came from the Connemara region and met in Roxbury.

From the Advertiser,

“The victory of Boston mayor elect Marty Walsh, the son of Connemara emigrants, has been hailed a ‘great day for Galway’ by local representatives who predict a strengthening of ties between the two cities and a much anticipated visit to the west by April next year.”
