Bright lipstick made a big impression on the Spring 2014 runways. The key to rocking the look? Choosing a color to complement your complexion.

Fair Skin
To avoid looking like Bozo the Clown, choose blue-based pinks or fuchsia. These shades emphasize the pink undertones in your complexion. We recommend MAC Cosmetics lipstick in “Candy Yum-Yum” (a matte pink) or, for a less expensive option, L’Oréal’s Colour Riche “Velvety Fuschia 173.”

Olive Skin
Medium or olive skin tones should emphasize warmth with red or orange. For fall, tomato shades are seasonally chic, like Revlon ColorStay Liquid Lipstick in Top Tomato – a Miranda Kerr favorite.

Dark Skin
For a stunning look, choose a deep plum color to add depth to your skin tone. Try Tom Ford’s Lip Color in “Bruised Plum for a rich, wine-stain finish. Or, go wild and mix of warm and cool undertones with L’Oréal’s Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain in “Berry Persistent.”

Before you slash it on, though, use a thin nylon brush to outline your lips with concealer for a smudge-proof application. Then pat lipstick on with your fingers for a soft, matte lip. Tip: Go easy on the eye makeup – your lips should do the talking.
