On Thursday, HBO talk show host and “comedian” Bill Maher controversially downplayed the tragic Boston Marathon bombings which killed three and injured 264. When discussing the Red Sox recent World Series victory and subsequent parade, Maher made light of how the procession stopped at ground zero on Boylston Street, where the World Series trophy was momentarily placed in in remembrance.

One day later, retired Boston Police Sargent Sean Murphy, who released photographs of suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, responded directly to Maher, writing him a letter and posting it to his Facebook page.

Maher insensitively said of Boston, “I mean, your city was not leveled by Godzilla” – to which even politician Anthony Weiner appeared shocked and embarrassed, countering ““I don’t know … such a nice moment, what’s wrong with you?” Mayor Menino, for his part, has called Maher’s comments “very irresponsible.”

Murphy was largely applauded for leaking the photographs back in July out of protest for Rolling Stone featuring Tsarnaev on its cover just three months after the tragic incident. Naturally, the wounds were still fresh. For dispatching the unauthorized pictures, he was removed from active duty.

In August, Murphy was allowed to return to work, though he was placed on the midnight shift presumably as punishment. He retired earlier this month.
