Okay, so there’s a superstition that warns us to never gift shoes. But we’re pretty sure we’d be happy with opening any box that involved some fancy foot candy. Here, we’ve gathered tips to help you figure out how to gift a pair of shoes that are not only well-received, but well-fitting.

Stay basic. When buying shoes, whether they’re for the man or the woman in your life, staying basic is always a winning choice. One can never go wrong with a rich, polished brown wing tip or loafer for the men, or a comfortable black leather flat for the ladies. These are wardrobe staples that can be thrown on with any outfit and will never go out of style.

Sole matters. Leather soles get a bad rap for being uncomfortable, but the truth is, well-made pairs can mold to your feet and bring style and comfort together in one. When buying a pair of women’s shoes – especially those with a heel – looking at the sole is crucial. Go for something flexible, as this allows toes to bend more naturally and creates less stiffness in the foot throughout the day.

Stretch it out. Though it’s easy to remember a shoe size, knowing the exact width of a person’s toes is pretty near impossible unless you’re their personal shopper. To avoid a tight squeeze for the recipient, opt for a shoe fabric with some give to it. A boat shoe, a soft and flexible leather flat, or canvas sneaker will stretch with wear. Avoid nylon or plastic, as they’ll hardly stretch (and aren’t comfortable, to boot).
