Cambridge-based Hubway stations will stay open throughout the winter, while Boston, Brookline and Somerville stations will be out of service. The option of keeping Hubway stations open year-round was discussed last year, with a December 2013 launch date in mind.

According to a press release, this Cambridge pilot plan is looking to provide year-round Hubway service. Annual members will be allowed to continue to use Cambridge stations during the winter season at no extra cost. And 24-hour, 3-day and monthly passes will be available.

“We are pleased with the opportunity to pilot Hubway service year-round,” Cambridge City Manager Richard C. Rossi said, in a statement. “We’re committed to supporting sustainable transportation options, and we are excited to continue the program this winter season.

Minor adjustments to the Cambridge Hubway system include the removal of the Lafayette Square/Main Street station for the winter and the relocation of the Lechmere Hubway station to the sidewalk just to the east of the station.

Stations in Boston, Brookline, and Somerville, however, will experience regular, seasonal removals, which began yesterday, November 18th.

To keep Cambridge stations open during the winter, the Hubway field team will be responsible for daily snow removal. From 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., the team, coordinated by Hubway’s dispatch office, will clear stations of snow and ice.

Hubway service may close temporarily during extreme weather. If that’s the case, public announcements will be made on social media and Hubway’s website. Hubway members will have alerts emailed directly to them, in case of any closures. Additionally, the Spotcycle app will let riders know if bikes are available.

In the event of a closure, riders will be able to return their bikes to a station, but none will be available for rent.
