On Monday, November 25, MillerCoors and Hailo Boston announced a new partnership, and a new initiative.

This holiday season, the two companies will be teaming up to make the city safer for both MillerCoors and Hailo customers, and their communities. Through a new initiative to launch on December 2, the partnership will run a promotion to help eliminate drunk driving by offering Hailo credits to guests at any bar or restaurant in the city that serves MillerCoors products.

“At MillerCoors, we believe that with great beer comes great responsibility,” said MillerCoors representative Tom Mancini, at a press conference Monday. “It’s not enough to brew great beer. To be a great beer company we also need to care about the well being of our consumers and their communities.”

In order to demonstrate that they care about their consumers, MillerCoors and Hailo will be giving away $1 million in cab rides in the city of Boston throughout the holiday season to keep drunk drivers off the road, and get everyone home safely.

From December 2 to January 5, 2014, guests at any establishment serving Miller Lite in Boston, Brookline and Cambridge are eligible for a $10 promo code from the Hailo app. All you have to do is download the app (or simply open it if you’re an existing user), enter the establishment’s code, and then summon a taxi. The discount will be applied to your next ride. The promotion will also be launched in New York City and Chicago, making the $3 million-total initiative the companies’ biggest yet.

Bars and restaurants serving Miller Lite will be encouraged to tell their patrons about the promotion, and Hailo drivers will also be aware and engaged of the initiative, making more cabs available late at night.

Justin Raymond, co-president of Hailo, spoke of the convenience of Hailo at this morning’s press conference, and how that convenience – the “evolution of the hail,” according to Raymond – plays an important role in getting Bostonians home safely.

“To summon a taxi cab, it takes two taps on a smartphone,” said Raymond. “What this means is that you don’t have to leave a bar, restaurant, or pub. Safety is a key tenant to the Hailo company culture.”

Earlier this year, after two different incidents of assault by the drivers of unmarked “gypsy” cabs, the safety benefits of smartphone apps that allow users to hail a cab indoors was highlighted. This notion can be applied to the avoidance of drunk driving, especially during the holiday season.

According to National Fraternity Order of Police Representative Richard Shaler, drunk driving costs the country $132 billion a year, but that’s not the only cost.

“For me, it’s the loss of life,” said Shaler. “One person. Forget the $132 billion. If we can save one life through any program, it’s well worth it.”

So between December 2 and January 5, take advantage of the Miller Lite and Hailo partnership by using Hailo to get home from anywhere serving Miller Lite, with a $10 discount off of your ride.
