An LBD and black pumps are on the must-have list for every woman. But what about a go-to color for your nails? Two words: bright red. Just take a look at how the bold color has served as a stylish staple for women throughout the years.

1920s: Technicolor is introduced and viewers can see their favorite actresses’ nail colors for the first time.

1950s: Stars like Lucille Ball paint their lips and tips a matching scarlet red, creating a trend that’s still in style to this day.

1980s: Red nails take over the small screen, with actresses on Dynasty and Dallas rocking the bold, statement-making polish.

1990s: The color conquers the shoe world when Christian Louboutin borrows his assistant’s red nail polish. He paints the sole of a prototype shoe, and an icon is born.

Today: Red nail polish is bona fide classic, worn by stars like Lana Del Rey, Rihanna, and more.
