An 8-alarm fire in South Boston has ravaged an old warehouse Tuesday, charring a building undergoing renovation in Fort Point. The call came in just around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning to 327-333 Summer Street near South Station, according to the Boston Fire Department.
Simply by looking at the BFD’s Twitter feed, it’s able to be determined that the fire sprang to an unruly eight alarms within just minutes. Luckily, firefighters were able to harness the blaze and put it under control just as swiftly. As of 8:20 a.m. they were still battling the inferno, but had reduced it significantly.
The fire department reports that there are no injuries or missing persons; however, it did set up a precautionary collapse zone after glass windows on the first three floors were blown out due to the intensity and severity of the fire.
It’s thought that the building was being converted into residential apartments. The cleaning crew on the scene this morning was able to escape before incurring and harmful injuries. As of 8:40 a.m. firefighters were still completely unable to access the building from the inside, hosing it down from adjacent buildings and elevated parking garages, and therefore have since reported that there are still no injuries or people inside.
Expect to be pouring water on it well into afternoon. This area of Summer St. still closed, D Street to South Station.
