With temps dropping below zero, it’s important to bundle up. But when you’re piling on so many layers, it’s easy for your figure to get lost beneath it all. To avoid that frumpy look, check out the tips below for finding a winter jacket that’s actually flattering.

Know sleeves matter.
The type of sleeve you choose when picking a coat can help accentuate your frame – yes, really. For example, if you’re looking to add height, a bracelet-length sleeve will help elongate your frame, while raglan and dolman sleeves help soften broad shoulders.

Don’t count puffers out.
It’s easy to assume a puffer coat will turn you into a marshmallow – but that won’t be the case if you nab one with diagonal quilts or insets at the waist. These small details will draw attention to the waistline and pull out your natural shape instead of masking it with fluff.

Size up.
You’ll likely be piling on the layers under your coat this winter, so it’s always wise to buy one size up. Try your intended purchase on with a cozy sweater underneath – if your coat pulls across the bottom when zipped, choose the next size.

When all else fails, belt it.
Pre-belted coats are really in this season – but if the coat you love doesn’t have one, don’t fret. Simply grab your favorite belt and cinch it around your natural waist (belt loops not required).
