In perhaps one of the most peculiar bills to be considered by the Massachusetts legislature, Mayor-elect and State Representative Marty Walsh’s proposal to make the song “Roadrunner” by The Modern Lovers the state song of Mass. was mulled over by Beacon Hill brass Thursday. In fact, so passionate is the Mayor-elect in having the tune represent the Bay State that he sent his staffers to appear before the Joint Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight to testify on the song’s behalf.

“Roadrunner” isn’t the only song contending for the designation of official rock song either. Outdated Aerosmith’s “Dream On” was put forth as an option as well, and we here at BostInno made a few suggestions of our own, but with the clout of the Mayor-elect in support of it, “Roadrunner” is the clear frontrunner.

“’Roadrunner’ is a song that has sentimental value to many people in the Commonwealth,” as read Mayor-elect Marty Walsh’s statement. “I made a promise to do everything possible to have this legislation passed, and though I was not able to attend today’s hearing in person, the support we’ve rallied and the testimony planned sends a clear message: ‘Roadrunner’ is a love song to Massachusetts, and the perfect choice.”

Also testifying on the local significance of the song and in support of the bill was state Senator Bob Hedlund; Representative Dan Cullinane; Ellie Marshall, a former member of The Modern Lovers; and Joyce Linehan, founder of arts and culture public relations firm Ashmont Media.

The band hails from Massachusetts and this song in particular is an ode to what Walsh’s press secretary describes the state’s “urban landscape, with nods to Massachusetts landmarks both civic and industrial.”

Also on the committee’s docket Thursday was a bill filed to recognize Bell’s Seasoning as the official seasoning of the Commonwealth.
