Before we can wrap up 2013 and look ahead to the impending new year, First Night button holders will be afforded a chance to witness a spectacle of American athleticism. Promoting Boston’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration, Mayor Menino’s office has announced one free ticket to button holders for the TD Garden’s Championship Ladies Short Program – the last qualifying competition prior to the selection of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team – for each ticket bought (buy one, get one free).

The offering comes courtesy of the Skating Club of Boston, some of whom will take to the ice at Boston Common’s Frog Pond to help ring in 2014.

According to a statement from the Mayor’s office, “Attendees should present First Night buttons at the TD Garden box office, or use the assigned code FIRSTNIGHT online at ticketmaster.com.”

While all outdoor events, spectacles, and festivities are free to attend, anything held indoors requires the button. Sheltered items include museum exhibits, historical house tours, concerts, and films while activities subjected to the cold wrath of mother nature will be in the form of intricate ice sculptures, walking tours, and interactive art projects.

A free ticket to watch the last qualifying event to make the Olympic figure skating squad isn’t likely to be easy to come by, as the Mayor’s office notes further that “The U.S. Championships were last held in Boston in 2001 and broke all attendance records.” In similar respect, the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority is predicting a record-breaking year in terms of hotel room sales per night and economic investment in the city largely due to the Championship, which kicks off 2014 events in Boston.

First night buttons only cost $10 and are readily available for purchase online or “at participating Boston-area CVS Stores, Bank of America branches, BosTix booths, Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau information centers.”
