Well folks – it looks as though we’re getting ramped up for the first big snowstorm of the year. With 2014 off to an interesting start, we’re here to keep you informed with snowy updates and reports from the National Weather Service, which is currently predicting high wind gusts and white-out conditions with snow accumulation of anywhere from eight to 14 inches.

And to help you “enjoy the winter weather a little more,” the City of Boston has provided us with 5 things you should know when it snows in the Hub. Without further ado, here’s a quick rundown of what to know during and after this New Year’s nor’easter.

Stay Informed

Staying informed during this snowstorm is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. Stay tuned as we update you with news from the National Weather Service and from the City of Boston on this New Year’s nor’easter. You can also register for Alert Boston, to receive texts and alerts from the City. Subscribe to Twitter Alerts for breaking news and @NotifyBoston for emergency tweets.

Clear Your Sidewalks

Every property owner in Boston is responsible for clearing their walkway. Make sure you and your neighbors are aware that it’s your responsibility to remove any ice, snow and slush from sidewalks within 3 hours of the snow ending. The City requests that you leave “a minimum path of 42” wide” path for people to walk on. And if you see a sidewalk that hasn’t been cleared, you can let the City know here.

Adopt a Hydrant

You can sign up to “adopt a hydrant” and claim responsibility for keeping a city hydrant clear of snow and ice. After the snow has ended, it’s important to keep our city safe so sign up today and encourage others with the hashtag #AdoptAHydrant.

Be a Snow Angel

Help the elderly in Boston shovel their snow and clear their sidewalks by volunteering as a snow angel during this winter storm. You can connect with Boston’s elderly commission through their Facebook page.

Get Engaged

No, not with a diamond ring – but by connecting with Boston Public Works. They’re going to need your help keeping the roads safe during the next few days. The City asks that “if you see roadways that require attention,” to let them know via “any of these methods, whether you prefer calling our 24-Hour Hotline (617-635-4500), using the Citizens Connect mobile app, and more.”

Happy Snow Day – and stay safe!
